Report: Twitter launching Vine video sharing app for iOS

Twitter is poised to introduce Vine, a video sharing application optimized for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. Citing sources familiar with the project, AllThingsD reports the app could go live as soon as today--on Wednesday, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo tweeted a brief clip demonstrating Vine in action.

Twitter acquired Vine in October 2012, prior to its commercial launch. The app enables consumers to produce videos running no longer than six seconds; users can film clips in a single take or pause the recording to string together montages of brief shots (for example, Costolo's video breaks down the preparation of a steak tartare dish across nine individual steps, each running less than one second). Users may also follow other Vine accounts.

Twitter is rolling out Vine as a standalone app available for download from Apple's App Store. Sources said Vine is not a Twitter-branded product, and while users may share videos to their Twitter account, recording capabilities are not yet integrated into the flagship Twitter for iOS app.

The Vine launch follows just weeks after Twitter unveiled new mobile photo editing features designed to replace functionality lost when Facebook (NASDAQ:FB)-owned image sharing service Instagram disabled all Twitter integration. Developed in partnership with photo editing tools provider Aviary, the features are built directly into Twitter's mobile social networking apps for iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, and enable users to re-imagine smartphone photos by applying any one of eight filters ranging from black-and-white to vintage.
