Sprint launches Direct Connect Now push-to-talk app for Android

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is rolling out Direct Connect Now, a downloadable application enabling subscribers to leverage push-to-talk capabilities on Android smartphones.

According to Sprint, Direct Connect Now is highlighted by touchscreen-based controls designed to appeal to a segment of consumers who want push-to-talk service but don't want the signature button-based interface that comes with it. The app--which leverages Qualcomm's (NASDAQ:QCOM) IP-based PTT platform and is interoperable with both Sprint Direct Connect and Nextel Direct Connect--also supports Group Connect calls for up to 21 participants, call alerts and synchronization with the device's address book.

Sprint Direct Connect Now is currently limited to the Kyocera Rise but will expand to additional devices, including the LG Optimus Elite, in the near future. To begin using the app, subscribers must first download it from the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play storefront, then sign up for Direct Connect--the service is included free with many Sprint rate plans, or available for an additional $5 per month on others.
