Google pledges fix for Android 4.2 December dates glitch 'soon'
Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is working to resolve a software glitch that expunged the month of December from Android Jelly Bean 4.2's native People app, which stores information such as friends' birthdays and other important dates.
"We discovered a bug in the Android 4.2 update, which makes it impossible to enter December events in optional fields of the People app (this bug did not affect Calendar)," Google said in a post published Tuesday to its Google+ Android feed. "Rest assured, this will be fixed soon so that those of you with December birthdays and anniversaries won't be forgotten by your friends and family."
An Android user first reported the issue via the Google Project Hosting site late last week. Dozens of other Android owners subsequently corroborated the original bug report, with screen shots also documenting December's omission from the People app date picker.
Google unveiled Android 4.2 late last month. The revamped OS powers new devices including LG Electronics' Nexus 4 smartphone and Samsung Electronics' Nexus 10 tablet and brings the new Photo Sphere camera, which enables users to capture 360-degree panoramic images they can share via the Google+ social platform or upload to Google Maps; Gesture Typing, a Swype-like text input tool enabling users to drag their finger across the screen from letter to letter; and Miracast, which brings wireless media sharing capabilities similar to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Airplay.
Android 4.2 also delivers new support for multiple tablet users. Each individual within a family or staff can customize his own homescreen, background, widgets, apps and games. Android multitasking simplifies toggling between users, without requiring logins or logouts. Google also promises faster, more precise mobile search results, more fluid graphics and screen transitions and more responsive touch interactions, automatically boosting the device's CPU when the user touches the device screen and dialing it back down when idle to improve battery life.
