No longer second fiddle to Europe and Japan on the texting front, U.S. mobile subscribers are finally flexing their thumbpower. According to CTIA, U.S. subscribers sent a total of 48.7 billion SMS messages in the last six months. That's a 50 percent jump from the same period last year. Additionally, the association says about 40 percent of mobile phone subscribers use text messaging. While that's a 25 percent jump, it still lags the 60 percent texting penetration in Europe.
