News from the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas: Nine of the largest U.S. broadcasters announced the formation of the Open Mobile Video Coalition, a group dedicated to the acceleration of mobile digital broadcast TV. The coalition will work with the NAB's Advanced Technology Advocacy Committee to promote mobile digital broadcast technical standards and objectives for broadcasters, manufacturers, service providers, content producers and consumers as well as drive regulatory support and promote consumer adoption.
The Open Mobile Video Coalition's co-founders--Belo Corp., Fox Television, Gannett Broadcasting, Gray Television, ION Media Networks, NBC and Telemundo, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune Broadcasting--collectively represent more than 280 TV stations covering 95 million households in 49 of the top 50 markets. "The industry is on the cusp of unlocking the full potential of the digital broadcast spectrum, and this group of leaders has the vision, the resources and the commitment to make it happen," said ION Media CEO Brandon Burgess in a prepared statement. "Everyone stands to win--broadcasters, content creators and consumers."
