British operator O2 sold hundreds of thousands of Apple iPhones in the weekend following the device's overseas debut [1], according to Peter Erskine, CEO of the carrier's parent firm Telefonica. O2 and retail partner Carphone Warehouse began selling the iPhone Friday evening--Erskine declined to cite specific sales figures, but said during a conference call that numbers are in line with initial expectations. "Around two-thirds of iPhone customers are new to O2 and [retail] footfall has been better than expected," he said. Erskine added that O2 added 1,400 retail staffers in advance of the iPhone's debut.
