Mobile web domain registry dotMobi announced the release of Instant Mobilizer, a new software product promising to automatically optimize small businesses' existing website assets for the mobile platform. According to dotMobi, the low-cost Instant Mobilizer product offers a proxy-based transcoding engine that translates PC sites for mobile browsing, complete with click-to-call functionality and Google mobile maps. Any subsequent changes to the website are automatically reflected in the mobile version. "You want people to be able to click to you and find you," said dotMobi vice president of advanced services and applications Paul Nerger in an interview with FierceMobileContent. "We're trying to anticipate what mobile users want from a mobile site for a local business." Nerger adds that the Instant Mobilizer service is 100 percent opt-in--small business owners may select the mobile web optimization offer when they sign up for .mobi registration.
dotMobi reports it has accepted 1.2 million .mobi domain registrations since its launch--according to Nerger, there are roughly 27 million small businesses across the U.S., many with static web pages that promote their products and services, but so far extremely few have embraced the possibilities of the mobile platform. "The wired web itself took a long time for small businesses to get there," Nerger said. "The early majority of brands on the mobile web are bigger companies, like banks and airlines. But even Apple doesn't have a mobile website. Target and Wal-Mart have them, but traditional IT companies don't get it yet. So we're trying to compress the technology cycle."
