Subscribers transmitted more than 84 billion messages in the first quarter of 2009 according to network infrastructure services provider VeriSign's Messaging and Mobile Media division. VeriSign--which delivers 60 percent of the text and mobile message traffic in the U.S. inter-carrier market--reports that its combined mobile messaging networks enabled an average of approximately 932 million messages per day in Q1, an 18.5 percent quarter-over-quarter increase and a 96 percent year-over-year leap. Traffic peaked on Valentine's Day, when VeriSign delivered more than 1.06 billion SMS and MMS messages.
VeriSign's Inter-Carrier MMS and PictureMail platforms also continued to experience traffic growth: MMS and PictureMail volumes increased 130 percent and 84 percent respectively over the previous quarter. In total, VeriSign delivered more than 1.1 billion MMS messages in Q1.
