Sports media giant ESPN announced visits to its mobile website increased 82 percent in September 2009 over the previous year, with the mobile site also posting a single-day traffic record of 8.5 million visits on Oct. 11. ESPN adds that its ScoreCenter application for Apple's iPhone and iPod has posted download totals exceeding 3 million--the app logged more than 2 million unique users in September, with more than 50 percent of users returning to it at least weekly.
Fan interest in Oct. 5's Monday Night Football matchup pairing the Minnesota Vikings and quarterback Brett Favre against his former team the Green Bay Packers translated to a 15.3 rating, the highest in ESPN's 30-year cable history. Excitement over the game spilled over into digital platforms: ESPN.com posted more than 110 million pageviews to NFL content accessed via computers and mobile devices for Monday through Tuesday at noon, up 47 percent from the comparable time period the previous year.
