Devices using Google's Android operating system now make up 17 percent of smartphone traffic on AdMob's network in the U.S., based upon results of the mobile advertising marketplace's September 2009 Mobile Metrics Report. This is up from 13 percent in August 2009. The iPhone operating system still leads the pack, making up 48 percent of all U.S. smartphone traffic with Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices coming in at 14 percent.
AdMob noted that a year ago in September 2008 the Motorola RAZR was the top device in the U.S. and the iPhone was the only touchscreen device in the top 10. Fast forward to September 2009 and five of the top 10 devices on the list have a touchscreen, six have WiFi capability and six have application stores.
WiFi capability appears to be a big advantage. AdMob reports that in the September report 42 percent of requests in the U.S. were made from WiFi-capable devices and 18 percent were made over a WiFi connection, compared to 5 percent in September 2008.
