Sony Ericsson--previously [1] named the Official Mobile Handset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup--announced the launch of Twitter Cup, a new social networking initiative enabling soccer fans to support their team online or via mobile device. The Sony Ericsson Twitter Cup includes all 32 national teams vying for the World Cup title and follows the same format as the official event--the squad with the most fan tweets in each round will advance to the next stage of the virtual tournament, regardless of how the real team fares on the pitch in South Africa. Sony Ericsson says it will monitor all tweeting activity from today's Twitter Cup launch (coinciding with the group stage draw for World Cup 2010) through the final match on July 11 to determine the winners.
