Five iPad titles that are revolutionizing mobile gaming

Tools

From the moment Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) first unveiled its iPad tablet computer in late January, it seemed inevitable the device would rewrite the language of mobile gaming. Building on the myriad breakthroughs introduced by developers creating games for Apple's iPhone, the iPad promises an even bigger, bolder and better gameplay experience: With its 9.7-inch, full-color touchscreen display and advanced processing power, the iPad delivers rich, sophisticated graphics on par with traditional console gaming platforms. Add in enhancements like motion-sensitive controls and 3G wireless broadband connectivity, as well as anytime/anywhere access to Apple's App Store (300,000 iOS applications and rising, including more than 35,000 optimized expressly for the iPad form factor), and it becomes no surprise that as of September unit sales topped 7.5 million.

As expected, gaming dominates iPad user interaction: According to recent Nielsen Company research, 91 percent of all iPad owners have downloaded applications to the device, with 62 percent purchasing premium games, more than any other iPad paid app category. As of Nov. 1, games represent half of the top 10 applications on the iPad's Paid Apps bestseller countdown, led by blockbuster titles like Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. Gamers are quickly grasping the enormous differences in gameplay between the iPhone and iPad, however, with mobile advertising exchange Mobclix reporting that gaming sessions on the iPad typically run three times longer than the same title on iPhone.

The iPad heralds such a dramatic leap forward that it's easy to forget the tablet didn't even reach retail until late April. Six months later, the first wave of games is exploring and expanding the scope of what the device can do. Here are five iPad titles at the forefront of the mobile gaming renaissance.
