Revisiting the Top Mobile Apps winners of 2007
In this second part of our series looking back at the companies and applications that won the Top Mobile App award, we look at the class of 2007. It was the year that the original iPhone launched, and marked significant growth in mobile Internet traffic, particularly of the social networking kind.
The applications selected that year reflected changes in the mobile content industry as a whole, from entertainment and content services to social networking to user-generated offerings.
Some of the applications that highlight this trend include Intercasting Anthem's app. Intercasting was acquired by Good Technology earlier this year, but the core of Anthem's intuitive and integrated social networking application--which combined a range of Web-based social networking sites and delivered a media-rich interface--has been preserved and enhanced.
A few applications have enjoyed continued success, including ESPN's MVP application, which found new life with Verizon Wireless after ESPN's ill-fated MVNO went bust. Others, such as GetMobio's Mobio application, have not fared as well.
Overall, the changing application landscape from 2006 to 2007 is reflected in the winners from 2007, each of which delivered a unique experience for users. Take a look at the top apps from 2007 and see where they are today. --Phil
