That's What She Said - The Mobile App Turkeys of 2009
Why is it a turkey?
Everyone loves NBC's The Office. You could argue it's the finest network sitcom of the decade. And everyone knows someone like star Steve Carell's regional manager Michael Scott--painfully insecure, socially awkward and desperate for attention, his signature double entendre "That's what she said!" is perhaps the series' most memorable catchphrase. But like most pop-culture catchprases, "That's what she said!" is not particularly funny when it's stripped of its original context, which hasn't stopped millions of Office viewers from interjecting it into their everyday lives anyway.
Haven Interactive's free "That's What She Said" iPhone soundbite application stretches the gag far past the point of no return, requiring users to halt their conversations, pull out their smartphone and access the TWSS app all for the sake of a recycled punchline that doesn't even feature Carell's voice. (That's correct--the app has absolutely no affiliation with The Office or NBC.) As one user's App Store review astutely points out, "Why do you need this when you could just say ‘That's what she said?'" Fortunately, the whole process requires about as much time as it takes to properly distance yourself from the individual using the application in question.
