Appealling appalling app review

With thousands of new mobile applications entering the market every week, it's becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to identify the apps that deliver the best--and the worst--that smartphones have to offer. Appealing/Appalling is a weekly feature that separates the wheat from the chaff--from games to navigation tools to augmented reality solutions, we cover it all, encompassing both free and premium downloads and spanning all major operating systems. "Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad," wrote A.A. Milne in his 1920 essay "The Charm of Golf," and by that measure Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is destined to end up the most popular game in the App Store: Never have I had so much fun playing a mobile title at which I am so unequivocally horrible. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 isn't so difficult or frustrating as the real thing, of course, but it's damn close--the controls are easy to learn but profoundly challenging to master, and the nuances of the game are merciless. Even the slightest miscalculation in club speed or cup distance can send the hole (or even the round) spiraling out of control. In other words, it captures everything you love and hate about golf, and it's no less addictive.

What further sets Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 apart from previous mobile golf titles is its wealth of gameplay modes and personalization options. Gamers can select a solo round, go head-to-head over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth multiplayer, or enter PGA Tour mode. There's also a Closest to the Pin challenge that integrates with Facebook as well as more than 20 mini-games. Gamers can create their own male or female golfer, or play as pro stars like Woods, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson or Paula Creamer--courses include venerable sites like Pebble Beach, St. Andrews, TPC Sawgrass as well as the Predator fantasy course. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 also deserves commendation for its sublime graphics and note-perfect sound effects. The only thing missing is the 19th hole libations.

Cat of the Year 2010 isn't an app--it's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Let's start with the obvious questions first: Who decides the Cat of the Year award winner? Is there an international voting body? Does the public have any say in the outcome? Do previous "Cats of the Year" automatically receive a vote, like Academy Award winners or Heisman Trophy champions? Does Animal Planet televise the awards ceremony? Has there ever been a scandal that stripped the reigning "Cat of the Year" of its title, like when those photos of Vanessa Williams surfaced? And when are the Cat of the Year 2011 ballots mailed out?

Then there's the award-winning feline itself. It's a Himalayan Red Point named Mina. I've never owned a cat--call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of keeping boxes of animal waste in my home--but it seems to me that a breed called Himalayan Red Point should be, you know, red, or at least orange. But this cat is white! What's up with that? Is this why it's the "Cat of the Year" for 2010? It's all so confusing. Maybe I'm just overthinking this. Cat of the Year 2010 seems to suggest as much. "Do you love Cat? Just enjoy it!" the app commands. Either way, I'm pretty sure I spent more time scrutinizing this thing than the developer did coding it. Bad kitty!
