When conventional social networking becomes a little too social, there's Yammer, a virtual collaboration tool that limits communication expressly to authorized colleagues. Yammer users can exchange frequent short messages to share ideas, suggestions, feedback and updates on current projects, with all input limited to co-workers who submit a verified corporate email address within the same domain--spinoff communities extend the service to partners and customers, and users can customize whose messages they receive by following designated contacts and joining groups, creating personalized information feeds. In addition, each Yammer user creates a personal profile including their photo, title, contact info, expertise and background, fostering a more intimate corporate environment and bulldozing silos between groups and departments. Forget Facebook--Yammer more closely reflects the changing face of corporate communications.
