2008 Year in Review: Apple changes everything, again

Tools

It's Christmas Eve, which for decades heralded the traditional end of the holiday shopping season. That officially changes in 2008--for anyone who unwraps a new iPhone or iPod touch on Christmas morning, the holiday shopping is just beginning. Unlike brick-and-mortar department stores and malls, Apple's virtual App Store is open 24/7/365, meaning there's no need to wait until Dec. 26 to begin downloading applications to your new device--whenever and wherever you need a mobile app to help kill some time, help better manage your time or help you get to your destination on time, the App Store has what you're looking for. It's just another facet of the consumer revolution that Apple kick-started over the past 12 months. Keep reading for all the major trends that shaped the mobile content industry in 2008. -Jason

P.S. Please note that FierceMobileContent is going on a short holiday hiatus--publication will resume as usual on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. Have a happy and safe winter break.

When history is rewritten will people still attempt to see the truth? Apple did not start the consumer revolution. In fact, if you want the truth it was a Carrier allowing the iphone to be allowed within their product line-up that made the difference. If T-mobile had won the bidding then T-Mobile would have been the reason but in this case it is AT&T. Application Store??? Please look at Symbian.. Handango,Symbian 60, Nokia Forum...and more.. it's been done and has been there for a while ..oh yes, the download icon on N-series phones .. been there done that again. REALITY PEOPLE.. Yes, I know the iPhone is a dramatic hit but don't change history tell the truth. History was made but it wasn't by iphone it was only covered up by it and the media either because of monetary, political, or lack of knowledge seems to continue down a path of misinformation. Happy New Year!

Wow, I don't think that anyone would read this and think that Apple was the first company to allow downloadable applications, or even to allow it on a mobile platform. They have just been the first to do it with this level of success.

When you look at consumer devices capable of easily downloading amazing applications and content, there aren't really any that compare in either sheer number, or in overall saturation to what Apple has done with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

You can continue to play the part of the anti-Apple angry commenter all you want, you can say that the iPhone didn't change history, and you can blame their success and publicity on the media, monetary, political or lack of knowledge, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a game changer, it is a top innovating product and it has transformed the landscape of mobile devices for years to come.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
