AAA maps out mobile traveler service
Motoring and leisure travel organization AAA announced the new AAA Mobile service, which brings its proprietary travel information, mapping data and road service to select GPS-enabled handsets. According to AAA, the service features audible, turn-by-turn directions as well as Diamond Ratings for hotels and restaurants and points of interest (e.g. merchants, gas stations and ATMs) found in the company's TourBook guides. AAA Mobile also offers one-click connection to roadside assistance powered by navigation applications provider Networks in Motion's location-based services platform.
AAA Mobile is now available for download at $9.99 per month. Subscribers can search travel data by category, such as hotel or restaurant, by proximity or by business name. AAA Mobile users also can view maps of present location, another address, an intersection, airport, or a bookmarked or recently used location. Pan and zoom functions allow users to scroll through maps, search for nearby merchants or request a route to that location.
"At a cost that is consumer friendly, AAA Mobile provides the convenience of obtaining information on demand using a device that most people already have and always carry with them," said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Automotive VP. "AAA serves the largest paid-membership group of consumers in North America and believes this technology represents a breakthrough in content, convenience and cost for millions of wireless phone users that want mobile access to AAA services. In addition, participating AAA members will now have the added capability to send their GPS location to AAA when they require roadside assistance."
