AdMob: Android ad requests grow 25 percent in June
Mobile ad requests from smartphones powered by Google's Android mobile operating system increased 25 percent month-over-month in June 2009 according to mobile advertising network AdMob's latest Mobile Metrics Report. AdMob reports that Android is now responsible for 5 percent of ad requests worldwide, for the first time edging past Windows Mobile in terms of global OS share. However, both platforms still pale in comparison to Apple: The iPhone remains responsible for 17 percent of total AdMob requests, followed by the iPod touch at 13.1 percent. While North America leads with 58 percent of iPhone and iPod touch users, Western Europe and Asia now represent 26 and seven percent of Apple device users, respectively. Overall, the worldwide ratio of iPhone to iPod touch users in the AdMob network was roughly two to one in June, a ratio the firm says has remained consistent over the last several months.
AdMob's June 2009 Mobile Metrics Report also estimates the number of iPhone and iPod touch devices sold in various countries. Based on Apple's recent announcement that it has sold 45 million iPhone OS-based devices worldwide as well as user data in the AdMob network, the firm believes the computing giant has sold 13 million iPhones and 12 million iPod touch units in the U.S. Germany trails in second with an estimated 1.9 million iPhones sold, followed by France with 1.8 million.
