Adobe debuts Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player
Still more news out of Mobile World Congress 2009: Software provider Adobe Systems announced the availability of the Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player, a new, over-the-air mobile runtime promising developers and content providers the means to create Flash technology-based applications for direct distribution to open OS devices. Available now as a public beta, the Distributable Player (which presently supports Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile devices) offers a distribution model similar to that of the desktop Flash Player--now mobile content aggregators can enable content publishers to deliver their applications to mobile users via their web catalogs, or creators may distribute their apps via their own promotional efforts or existing distribution channels. According to Adobe, brands including Accuweather, Dolce & Gabbana, Digital Chocolate, Disney and Hachette Filipacchi have already signed on. Adobe adds that the Distributable Player is its first step toward delivering a runtime that can be updated over the air, which would realize a major goal of the Open Screen Project industry initiative.
