Afterworld premieres on MySpace
Social networking service MySpace launched the first 10 episodes of Afterworld, an original digital series produced by Electric Farm Entertainment. The animated sci-fi serial promises audience interaction with its characters and storyline--each major character will have his own MySpace blog, while viewers may also suggest plot twists and solve puzzles. Afterworld's $3 million production budget reportedly signifies the largest investment any media company has made on MySpace--Electric Farm will waive its licensing fee, instead negotiating a cut of any ad revenues the social networking site generates from the series.
Electric Farm has sold Afterworld's international television, Internet, gaming and mobile rights to Sony Pictures International, which helped finance the series. Sony is already developing an Afterworld mobile game for release next year, and will also air 13 half-hour episodes on the Sci-Fi Channel in Australia.
"The idea was to create a new hybrid medium for entertainment using these different forms of technology so that fans can get their daily snack of entertainment when and where they want," said Afterworld writer/Electric Farm principal Brent Friedman in an interview with OnlineMediaDaily.
