Alca-Lu acquires cross-platform app solutions firm OpenPlug

Tools

Alcatel-Lucent has acquired mobile software and application development tools vendor OpenPlug, promising service providers, enterprises and developers new solutions to create and deploy apps across multiple device and store platforms. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The OpenPlug solution enables developers to write applications once and convert code into native software optimized for operating systems including iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and Linux--beyond smartphones, OpenPlug can also extend software to feature phones as well as IPTV set top boxes, game consoles and other connected devices. Alca-Lu said it will incorporate the OpenPlug toolset into its Developer Platform and Open API Service.

The OpenPlug deal follows roughly two months after Alcatel-Lucent acquired ProgrammableWeb, a resource for application programming interfaces enabling developers to build web, mobile and related connected apps targeting both consumers and enterprise users. ProgrammableWeb boasts a repository of over 2,000 web APIs, including interfaces for Google Maps, Flickr and YouTube--developers also can view close to 5,000 mashups integrating a number of different APIs into a single website or application.
