Alcatel-Lucent acquires API repository ProgrammableWeb
Alcatel-Lucent has acquired ProgrammableWeb, a resource for application programming interfaces enabling developers to build web, mobile and related connected apps targeting both consumers and enterprise users. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to Alcatel-Lucent, ProgrammableWeb will continue to operate as a distinct entity, overseeing its repository of over 2,000 web APIs. The API directory includes interfaces for Google Maps, Flickr and YouTube--developers can also view close to 5,000 mashups integrating a number of different APIs into a single website or application.
Alca-Lu said it plans to actively nurture the growth of the ProgrammableWeb ecosystem, adding resources from its own Open API Service and Developer Platform. The vendor giant adds it will share its own developer resources with the ProgrammableWeb community--the deal also grants Alca-Lu access to general API usage patterns as well as ProgrammableWeb's API monitoring services, API trial services and automated API updates.
