Amazon expands mobile shopping app to Android
Online retail giant Amazon.com announced the release of Amazon App for Android, promising consumers
efficient mobile access to thousands of merchants. Developed specifically for the Android platform and available for free download via Android Market, the application includes the Amazon Remembers feature, which enables shoppers to either snap a photo of an item or scan a barcode to receive a product match. In addition, Amazon App for Android allows users to make product purchases using Amazon's 1-Click ordering and track items/modify orders via the Your Account feature. Other features include personalized recommendations, editorial and customer reviews, Wish List access and the Gold Box Deal of the Day.
Amazon App for Android follows about six weeks after Amazon's acquisition of image recognition-based mobile marketing solutions provider SnapTell. The firm's Snap.Send.Get solution enables consumers to receive real-time reviews, prices and product information from retailers and advertisers by snapping and uploading photos of print advertisements, outdoor billboards, brand logos, product packaging, branded cans, bottles and wine labels--photos are then matched against SnapTell's image database, and the appropriate information or offer is transmitted to the user's handset.
