Amazon issues Kindle 3.0.3 software update preview

Tools

With its latest Kindle ereader software update slated for release in the next few weeks, online retail giant Amazon.com issued an early preview via the web, requesting that consumers trial the update and provide feedback prior to its official launch. According to Amazon, Kindle version 3.0.3 includes "general performance improvements," but does not offer specifics. Kindle owners interested in test driving the preview must visit the Amazon website, which offers detailed instructions on downloading the software and transferring it to the ereader via USB--upon completion, Amazon will issue the Kindle 3.0.3 upgrade over the air using its Whispernet wireless delivery system.

Amazon first introduced Kindle in 2007--the ereader device is now its bestselling, most gifted and most wished for product. The Kindle ebookstore offers over 700,000 titles, including new releases and the vast majority of current New York Times bestsellers, most priced at $9.99 or less. In July 2010, Amazon said it now sells 143 Kindle ebooks for every 100 hardcover books, including hardcover titles for which there is no corresponding Kindle edition.
