Amazon opens Best of Digital store to drive content discovery

Tools

With tablets, smartphones and e-readers high atop many wishlists this holiday season, Amazon.com is launching its new Best of Digital storefront, making it easier for consumers to download content optimized for their new devices.

The Best of Digital storefront touts Android applications, Kindle e-books, videogames, movies and television shows, music, magazines and software, all recommended by Amazon editors. The store also touts hundreds of digital content deals. Amazon also will leverage the store to promote its own mobile apps and digital services, including Amazon MP3, its multi-platform Amazon Mobile shopping solutions and the Amazon Deals app for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone.

According to Amazon.com, Christmas Day is historically the company's biggest day for digital media sales, followed by Dec. 26. Between Dec. 24 and Dec. 30 of 2010, Amazon customers purchased three times the amount of digital content bought during an average week.

The Best of Digital effort follows weeks after Amazon.com introduced its Kindle Fire tablet, giving consumers a single, portable point of access to digital media initiatives including the Kindle e-book catalog, Amazon Appstore for Android, Amazon Instant Video and Amazon MP3, with all content backed up in the cloud. The Kindle Fire is priced at $199, compared to $499 for Apple's cheapest iPad. According to Amazon.com, the Kindle Fire is the most successful product the digital retailer has ever introduced, with consumers purchasing more than a million each week.
