Amazon.com extends local deals to Kindle with Special Offers
Amazon.com will expand its fledgling local deals service to its ad-supported Kindle with Special Offers e-readers, enabling consumers to view and purchase offers targeted expressly to their home market.
Kindle with Special Offers users can snap up AmazonLocal deals without re-entering their account or credit card information. Once an offer is purchased, Amazon will transmit a voucher directly to the Kindle homescreen--customers may redeem the deal by showing the virtual voucher to the local merchant or by bringing in a printed copy. Amazon will initially roll out the deals to Kindle with Special Offers owners in New York City.
AmazonLocal launched earlier this year, promising consumers savings of up to 75 percent at area restaurants, spas and events and more. Many deals are sourced via Amazon's strategic partnership with daily deals giant LivingSocial. The service is now available in 44 locations, including Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and Seattle.
Amazon.com introduced the original, non-3G Kindle with Special Offers in mid-April. The device incorporates homescreen deals and sponsored screensavers. The online retailer has vowed it will not integrate ads directly into Kindle titles. A 3G-enabled version followed a month later, and in late July, Amazon announced the device now outsells all other Kindle versions.
