Amazon.com introduces Kindle Daily Deal e-book promotion

Tools

Amazon.com has quietly launched Kindle Daily Deal, offering substantial discounts on popular e-book titles. Amazon introduced the flash deal effort Wednesday, offering Kate DiCamillo's young-adult novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane for $1.39, 75 percent off the standard e-book price. The online retailer will unveil a new Kindle Daily Deal each day at approximately 3:00 am ET--as of today, Sara Gruen's bestseller Water for Elephants is priced at $2.99, 57 percent off.

Kindle Daily Deal represents Amazon.com's latest foray into the flash deals segment. In June 2010, the company acquired deal-a-day site Woot and in January partnered with LivingSocial to sell close to 1.4 million $20 Amazon gift cards priced at half off. Kindle Daily Deal also recalls Amazon Appstore for Android's Free App of the Day promotion, which the retailer launched in March 2011 by giving away free downloads of the exclusive Angry Birds Rio.

Amazon's Kindle Store offers more than 950,000 e-books, including 110 of the 111 current New York Times Bestsellers. Over 800,000 of Kindle titles are priced at $9.99 or less. Amazon now sells more Kindle books than hardcover and softcover volumes combined: As of April 1, Amazon consumers purchase 105 Kindle titles for every 100 print books.

Earlier this month, Amazon.com unveiled Kindle Cloud Reader, an HTML5-based e-reader application enabling consumers to read digital books instantly via the Web browser, with no software download or installation required. Kindle Cloud Reader for iPad followed both Amazon.com and rival bookseller Barnes & Noble removing e-book purchase options from applications optimized for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform, indicating that Apple is beginning to actively enforce App Store subscription guidelines prohibiting content providers from integrating in-app purchase mechanisms linking consumers directly to their own websites.
