'Angry Birds' descend on Windows Phone 7 this spring
Rovio Mobile's blockbuster Angry Birds headlines a series of mobile games coming to Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 operating this spring. Forthcoming WP7 titles announced by Microsoft on its Windows Phone Blog also include Doodle Jump, Plants vs. Zombies, Hydro Thunder Go, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I and geoDefense. The new titles will begin rolling out via Windows Phone Marketplace on Apr. 6--Microsoft adds that all titles are Xbox Live-enabled, touting achievements, leaderboards and related features.
A minor controversy erupted in Nov. 2010 after a posting on the Microsoft website erroneously suggested that Angry Birds would soon land on the new Windows Phone 7 platform. "We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version," Rovio Mobile tweeted in response. "Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission." Microsoft quickly issued a statement accepting blame for the mix-up: "It appears information was mistakenly posted to Microsoft's website, and has been removed," the software giant said. A subsequent tweet clarified Rovio's position, hinting the developer hadn't entirely ruled out Angry Birds for Windows Phone: "We didn't get mad, just wanted to set the record straight," the firm explained. "And we haven't said we wouldn't do WP7."
