Rovio launched Angry Birds Space in late March on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile devices alongside desktop versions for Windows PCs and Apple's Mac platform. Angry Birds Space transplants the titular heroes and their pig opponents to new planets and zero gravity environments, complete with space footage filmed by NASA. Consumers downloaded the game more than 10 million times in its first three days of availability.
Last week Rovio released its first free Angry Birds Space update for iOS and Android, adding 10 new gameplay levels. The firm has also confirmed it is working to port the title to Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone operating system.
The Angry Birds franchise is closing in on a billion cumulative downloads; Rovio has also sold millions of plush toys and t-shirts. The company is poised to launch an animated Angry Birds series this fall, consisting of 52 short-form episodes running less than three minutes each. Late last year, Rovio said it is planning an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2013.
