AOL's digital video bid holds mobile potential

Tools

So no direct mobile implication here, but certainly something to look at for future opportunities; America Online has struck a deal to deliver on-demand video content to PCs running Intel's Viiv chipset solution. Basically, it's an end-run around Apple's iTV system, announced last week. The upshot for wireless is that AOL wants to deliver content to multiple platforms, and if it's TV/PCs today, mobile won't be far behind.

Now whether consumers actually want full movies on their phones is another story entirely, but half-hour sitcoms seem like a no-brainer. Mobile is a wildcard strategy that can boost one content competitor over the others, so a healthy competition between AOL and Apple is good for all. We'll keep an eye on this one.
