App Store adds 'Try Before You Buy' section
A new section in Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store digital marketplace spotlights free, so-called "lite" versions of close to 100 iPhone and iPod touch applications, encouraging consumers to 'Try Before You Buy.' The new App Store section is essentially an organizational update, bringing together lite versions of popular iPhone games and navigation solutions in one dedicated spot--Apple has not introduced any new application trial features or related tweaks, despite continued calls from developers and consumers to add a 24-hour app return policy similar to the one offered in Google's rival Android Market.
As of July 2010, the App Store offers over 225,000 applications optimized for Apple's iOS platform, including 11,000 expressly optimized for the computing giant's iPad tablet. App Store downloads now top 5 billion--free applications represent 81 percent of iOS downloads according to data released in late June by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who adds iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users presently download over 16.6 million apps each day.
