Apple approves SlingPlayer Mobile 3G app for iPhone

Tools

BARCELONA, Spain--Roughly two weeks after AT&T announced it will support placeshifting technology developer Sling Media's SlingPlayer Mobile video application across its 3G mobile broadband network, the operator's iPhone partner Apple officially approved the updated app for premium download from its App Store. iPhone and iPod touch users may now purchase the 3G-enabled SlingPlayer Mobile for $29.99 according to Sling Media, which made the announcement that Apple has green-lighted the controversial app here at the 2010 Mobile World Congress event. Users who previously purchased the app in its WiFi-only incarnation will receive the 3G update for free.

SlingPlayer Mobile enables users to stream live and recorded television content from their home entertainment system to their handset. Sling Media first issued SlingPlayer Mobile in May 2009--at that time, AT&T restricted the app to WiFi on grounds that 3G streaming would consume too much network capacity. Although AT&T took the fall for the controversy that followed, Sling later indicated the service was WiFi-only at Apple's request. AT&T finally approved the 3G version after a series of network tests, adding its its AT&T Developers Program website will provide network optimization requirements for video and other applications by the end of the first quarter.
