Apple bolsters device security with iOS 4.3.5 update

Tools

Less than two weeks after rolling out its iOS 4.3.4 software update, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) released another revamp Monday, further securing iOS-based devices against potential security threats. According to Apple, iOS 4.3.5 patches a security flaw that might allow an "attacker with a privileged network position [to] capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS." The update addresses the issue by improving validation of X.509 certificate chains.

With the previous iOS 4.3.4, Apple repaired a security vulnerability discovered by the German government, providing a buffer against attacks in the event a user opens a "maliciously crafted PDF file," Apple explained the buffer prevents malware from gaining control of the iOS device and stealing secure information by running programs without the user's permission.

In related news, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) seeded iOS 5 beta 4 to registered iOS developers. The company is expected to officially roll out iOS 5 sometime this fall. The beta 4 update is notable as the first version of iOS to arrive via over-the-air update. Apple officially introduced OTA updates late last month with the release of iOS 5 beta 2, enabling users to activate and set up iOS devices out of the box and receive software updates sans conventional computer connection--at that time, no compatible updates were available, however.
