Apple files 'multi-device' patent
Oh how I just love watching Apple's patent filings. Nothing gets the digerati more worked up than rumblings from the secretive compound in Cupertino. This time, Jobs & Co. filed a patent for a "multi-functional handheld device" that could have the ability to switch between a mobile phone, PDA, music player, video player, game player, digital camera, GPS receiver, handtop (?) and remote control. While the only thing it doesn't do is wash the car, apparently. Analysts say that this patent is likely the underpinning of Apple's mobile phone efforts.
Meanwhile, Apple has scheduled a "showtime" press event for Sept. 12th. While this coincides with CTIA, I seriously doubt we'll be seeing the debut of the much-rumored iPhone. My guess--the new and improved video iPod will be unveiled. And when the iPhone does see the light of day (my guess, next spring) it may only incorporate a few of the details outlined in this filing. Generally, a patent covers all possible uses of an idea, many of which may never get implemented.
