Apple to launch ringtone service via iTunes?

Tools

With a suite of new iPod devices expected to materialize at an Apple special event scheduled for Wednesday, the New York Post is reporting the computing behemoth will also launch a new ringtone service for its iPhone device via the iTunes retail storefront.

According to multiple sources familiar with Apple's plans, the new service will enable users to transform into a ringtone any song purchased through the iTunes platform--Apple will charge an additional but currently unspecified fee for any ringtone created for its products.

In addition to traditional ringtone sales, Apple will enable subscribers to create ringtones from any segment of a song they wish to spotlight. All major labels except Universal Music Group are expected to participate in the initiative--UMG declined comment.
