Apple launches iAd Gallery app to showcase mobile ads
If you're one of those people who watches the Super Bowl solely to check out the latest and greatest television commercials, then Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has a new iPhone application for you: iAd Gallery, dedicated expressly to campaigns running across the computing giant's iAd mobile advertising network.
The free iAd Gallery app touts efficient access to the latest rich media iAd campaigns, enabling iPhone users to spin a wheel of banners or search by advertiser, category or ad feature--in addition to information about each promotion, the app details the digital agencies behind them.
Consumer reaction to iAd Gallery is decidedly mixed. "Nice showcase for interesting and engaging ads," reads one App Store user comment, while another cracks "Finally, I can view all the ads I want without some stupid app getting in the way."
First introduced to the U.S. market in mid-2010, iAd promises more interactive and immersive rich media advertisements that keep users within an app instead of transporting them somewhere else.
"For a lack of an elegant way to say it, we think most of this mobile advertising really sucks, and we think we might be able to make some contributions," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said at the April 2010 media event heralding iAd's launch. "We think people are going to be a lot more interested in clicking on these things."
