Apple warns iPhone jailbreaking can crash apps
Apple is warning iPhone users against making unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS, arguing jailbroken devices face instability, disruption of services and compromised security. In a new article published on the Apple Support website, the computing giant reports that customers who have hacked their iPhone or iPod touch have battled with frequent and unexpected device crashes, crashing and freezing applications and loss of data, as well as unreliable voice and data services punctuated by dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections and delayed or inaccurate location data. Apple adds that jailbroken iPhones have suffered disruptions of services like Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather and Stocks, and third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have faced difficulty receiving alerts.
Apple goes on to warn that security compromises introduced by consumer modifications could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network or introduce malware or viruses. In addition, Apple contends that hacked software can result in accelerated battery drain. Finally, Apple reminds users that unauthorized modification of the iPhone OS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement, adding it may deny service for devices with unauthorized software.
