Are you ready for some Football?
Preseason football is already upon us, with the regular season just around the corner. As if taking a cue from the wireless hubbub over the World Cup, the wireless industry is rushing into sports headfirst with a range of mobile applications and services. Sprint is launching a mobile version of Electronic Arts' popular Madden NFL 07 videogame, the console version of which just launched this week. Games aside, Alltel Wireless will offer subscribers the ability to get ESPN Radio updates, coverage and recaps of their favorite games for $7 a month. Additionally, the carrier is offering a fantasy football news service from CBS Sportsline for an additional $5 a month. Finally, UpSnap is offering a dial-in service that streams fantasy football news from Ready-Set-Go Fantasy Sports.
Using mobile technology to let people plug in to their passions is always a good strategy. Expect to see a flood of similar content and application announcements as the season kickoff approaches. The best of them will offer some kind of integration with fans' existing football news/information sources. The worst won't, and will overcharge for the option. Go Broncos!
