Associated Press expands digital news with AP Gateway
Global news agency the Associated Press announced the introduction of AP Gateway, a new business unit created to seek and develop multimedia news opportunities across the web, mobile phones, tablets and ereaders. According to the Associated Press, the new Gateway unit will launch via applications for new devices including the forthcoming Apple iPad--the AP promises it will not merely repurpose its content across formats, but instead build differentiated experiences optimized for each device platform. AP Gateway will work in conjunction with the Associated Press' existing News Registry service, which tags news content with usage rights and source attribution--more than 200 newspapers are currently participating in the News Registry effort, which will move out of beta by the end of 2010.
The Associated Press adds that AP Gateway expands work initiated two years ago when it began aggregating AP and member content to create smartphone service AP Mobile. More than 1,000 member newspapers and broadcasters now contribute to the mobile effort.
