AT&T adds GetJar's free mobile apps catalog
AT&T (NYSE:T) will offer cross-platform application storefront GetJar's entire library of more than 75,000 free apps via its AT&T AppCenter portal. The new GetJar app download offers access to a vast selection of games, social networking solutions, productivity tools and more, available for feature phones as well as smartphone platforms including Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, iOS and Symbian--the firm supports roughly 2,300 different handset models in all. GetJar now serves consumers spanning over 200 countries, generating roughly 100 million downloads per month.
All GetJar apps are free; developers monetize their applications by incorporating advertising or launching demo versions through the site and upselling full-fledged premium iterations across other sales channels. GetJar's own revenue model is predicated on offering partners premium placement and promotional services--developers bid for prime real estate on the store's website, and the firm generates income according to the number of downloads that result.
The AT&T deal follows nine months after GetJar announced a similar relationship with Sprint (NYSE:S). Last month, GetJar unveiled GetJar+, a new pilot program offering consumers premium content for free, without any differences in gameplay or any ad insertions, registrations and the like. The GetJar+ initiative launched in cooperation with games developer Glu Mobile--paid titles like Brain Genius 2, Stranded: Mysteries of Time, Build-a-Lot and Race Driver Grid are available for free for a two-week period, and promoted in the "Recommended" section of the GetJar.com homepage. Games downloaded during the window of free availability are the consumer's to keep even after the promotion concludes.
