BlackBerry displaces Windows Mobile atop Handango Yardstick
Research In Motion's BlackBerry platform edged out Microsoft's Windows Mobile to become the dominant operating system within
smartphone content provider Handango's application catalog, representing 44 percent of all apps sold in the first half of 2009, up from 31 percent in 2008. According to the bi-annual Handango Yardstick global trend index, BlackBerry smartphones represent four of the top 10 devices adding software in terms of both units sold and revenue--games accounted for 36 percent of BlackBerry app sales, followed by personal information management (PIM) at 19 percent.
During the first half of 2009, Handango welcomed 550 new content partners to its network and added close to 7,000 new applications across categories including games, PIM, personalization, news and media, education, travel and messaging. Games now constitute 25 percent of all apps sold via Handango, up 6 percent a year ago--EA Mobile was the bestselling game developer between January and June.
