Britain turning off radio for mobile TV?
British communications regulatory group Ofcom is considering pulling the plug on AM and FM radio services and allocating the spectrum occupied by both bands for new services like mobile TV. In a published statement, Ofcom said it believes the spectrum would be better used for emerging applications like mobile broadcasting and digital radio and data services; many AM and FM licenses are up for renewal, and because automatic approval could tie up spectrum for the next 24 years, the time to make a long-term decision is now.
