C Spire's content discovery tool SCOUT passes 110K downloads
C Spire Wireless, a regional wireless carrier, reported that its personalized recommendations app, SCOUT, has surpassed 110,000 users across Android and iOS devices.
Launched last year, SCOUT asks users a series of questions and then suggests apps that he or she may enjoy. Soon after launch, the app expanded to include music, movie and eBook suggestions across Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Amazon.com. The carrier also expanded SCOUT to include App Critics--users who review and spotlight select apps--and App Packs--bundled, curated apps by interest.
"SCOUT gets to know each consumer in a more intimate way and offers app and entertainment recommendations that match their interests and needs--providing content that is relevant, meaningful and more personalized to each customer," said Suzy Hays, senior vice president of personalization and brand management for C Spire Wireless.
The milestone is important, for one, as app discovery becomes a bigger issue. In September, Apple rolled out a revamped App Store and the new iOS 6 that highlighted a new on-device application recommendation engine dubbed Genius. Genius is based on a UI developed by app discovery firm Chomp, which Apple acquired last year.
"As the wireless industry continues to consolidate and become more competitive, each carrier must find their special sauce," said Jeff Kagan, an Atlanta-based wireless and telecommunications industry analyst.
