Comcast extends Xfinity TV live streaming to tablets
Digital services giant Comcast will offer live streaming television content across tablet devices in-the-home later this year, enabling Xfinity TV subscribers to view broadcasts anywhere in the house when connected to a wireless router. In addition, Comcast said its Xfinity TV app for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad will soon incorporate a new ‘Play Now' feature packed with close to 3,000 hours of on-demand content that subscribers can view anywhere and anytime, whether in the home or out, as long as the device is connected to a wireless network.
Late last month, Comcast released version 3.0 of its Xfinity Mobile app for Apple's iOS platform, touting a number of significant enhancements including a "My Account" feature enabling subscribers to manage their Comcast services on the go. Customers can view their current invoice, make a one-time payment or set up automatic payments. In addition, Xfinity Mobile 3.0 integrates with Comcast's Xfinity TV app, offering access to program listings, channel-changing controls, remote DVR programming and On Demand library browsing. Also new: iPad optimization that leverages the tablet's advanced features and larger real estate to display email and voicemail messages.
Writing on the Comcast Voices blog, vice president of product management Raghu Rao stated future iterations of Xfinity Mobile will incorporate features like streaming premium TV content. Rao did not provide additional details, except to note the streaming service is "coming soon," adding Comcast plans a number of additional upgrades in 2011.
