Cox touts remote DVR apps with mobile service rollout

Tools

Cable giant Cox Communications finally introduced its long-awaited wireless service in three commercial markets, unveiling a series of Android smartphones bolstered by preloaded mobile applications giving subscribers on-the-go access to their home television experience. Cox Wireless--which runs over Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) CDMA network in the Hampton Roads, Va., Omaha, Neb. and Orange County, Calif. markets--touts "MoneyBack Minutes," which gives customers a 5-cent credit per each unused voice minute, up to $20 per month; the money will sit as a credit on subscribers' bills. In addition, Cox will offer free text message Usage Alerts notifying customers as they approach their maximum number of monthly minutes and messages.

The Cox Wireless platform also integrates subscriber features like home DVR programming and television guide listings--in addition, all Cox customers with an Android device can download the Cox Remote Guide Access application from Android Market to manage their home recordings and listings. Additional features include Universal Contact Manager to oversee, backup and organize all Cox High Speed Internet and Cox Wireless contacts in one place as well as a Voice to Text conversion solution that translates voicemail messages to SMS, enabling subscribers to read and respond without dialing.
