Cricket's Muve Music tops 100K users in five months
Five months after launching its all-you-can-eat Muve Music service, Leap Wireless' (NASDAQ:LEAP) prepaid Cricket Communications unit said the digital music effort has now signed up more than 100,000 customers. Cricket adds that Muve Music doubled its subscriber base over the last two months alone, with more than half of all Muve users new to the Cricket brand.

Cricket's digital music service, Muve Music, has over 100,000 users. |
Muve Music was first announced in late 2010 and premiered in conjunction with the Samsung Suede touchscreen multimedia phone (still the lone feature phone supporting the solution).
Cricket touts Muve Music as the first unlimited digital music service bundled with a new wireless rate plan. Cricket offers the service as part of its $55 flat-rate monthly service package, which includes unlimited nationwide calling as well as unlimited messaging, mobile web access, data backup and video.
Muve Music includes songs from all four major labels (Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music); along with full-track downloads, the service also boasts unlimited ringtones and ringbacks. Muve Music leverages a SanDisk solution that enables DRM-free over-the-air downloads--content is stored and protected on a special flash memory card, skirting conventional DRM requirements and extending battery life. In addition, the Samsung Suede ships with a dedicated music button enabling one-touch access to Muve content.
Cricket reports that the average Muve Music user spends between two and three hours each day listening to music on their phone, and downloads 400 songs per month. Muve customers have downloaded more than 100 million songs in all and played back more than 100 million songs in the month of May alone. In all, 99 percent of Muve users download and play songs each month and more than two-thirds have at least one active ringtone or ringback set in the service.
