Disney hints at streaming ESPN to wireless iPods

Tools

According to a patent filing made in November 2005 and published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week, the Walt Disney Co. is preparing to launch an ESPN-branded mobile user interface to deliver streaming sports content to digital media players…like, for example, a wireless iPod. That's right--the patent filing specifically cites the iPod among the mobile electronic devices compatible with the realtime ESPN service, suggesting the inevitable wireless iPod could be closer to release than manufacturer Apple Computer would have us think.

Given Apple CEO Steve Jobs is Disney's largest individual shareholder and Disney has delivered ESPN and ABC programming to the Apple iTunes storefront since January, it seems fair to assume this isn't just random speculation on the Mouse's part. All I know is when the wireless iPod finally does hit retail, I'm never missing ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" again.

Disney keep trying for this market, but the year hasn't been too good for them. Deals are still a-go-go for Disney USA, Disney UK got scrapped before launching and Mobile ESPN is going going nearly gone. Mixing Apple into is even better, the Apple mobile handset saga has been rumbling for what seems like years, in fact it is years.
