dotMobi registration to kickoff for telecoms

dotMobi has teamed up with registry company NamesBeyond to launch the registration process for the new .mobi domain. Members of the GSMA, CTIA, MMA, CWTA and the MEF will have first dibs on the domain from May 22. Applicants must, however, have a trademark on their company name and can only register their name as it is listed on their trade organization's roster. The .mobi domain is reserved for sites that are specifically geared for mobile devices and screens and aims to make the user experience on a mobile as good as it is on a standard PC. dotMobi's team plans to actively police the domain for rule-breakers. dotMobi CEO Neil Edwards told me registration for non-telecom trade group members will begin sometime in the fall.
