eBay expands mobile shopping services to Android
Online auction kingpin eBay announced the introduction of a new mobile application optimized for Google's Android operating
system, enabling consumers to search through auction listings, bid on items and check bidding statuses, and purchase and pay for Buy It Now acquisitions, and leave customer feedback. Additional features include voice-enabled search.
According to eBay, its gross merchandise value from mobile commerce activities topped $600 million at the end of 2009, up 200 percent year-over-year. Last month, eBay reported that the number of items purchased via its mobile applications for devices including Apple's iPhone tripled during the 2009 holiday season over the previous year--consumers purchased 1.5 million items on their mobile handsets during the holidays, translating to a sale every two seconds.
